The Child visa allows dependent children to live permanently with their parents in Australia.

Subclass 101

This visa is for children outside Australia at the time of application and visa decision.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a dependent child of an Australian citizen, eligible New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent visa holder.
  • Meet one of the following age and dependency criteria: 
    • Under 18 years old.
    • A full-time student aged 18 to 24, financially dependent on the parent.
    • Over 18 and unable to work due to a disability.
  • Be single and dependent on the parent.
  • Be outside Australia when the application is submitted and decided.

What the Child Can Do:

  • Stay in Australia indefinitely.
  • Work and study in Australia.
  • Enroll in Medicare, Australia’s public healthcare system.
  • Sponsor eligible relatives to migrate to Australia.
  • Apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible.

Subclass 802

This visa is for children in Australia at the time of application and visa decision.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a dependent child of an Australian citizen, eligible New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent visa holder.
  • Meet one of the following age and dependency criteria: 
    • Under 18 years old.
    • A full-time student aged 18 to 24, financially dependent on the parent.
    • Over 18 and unable to work due to a disability.
  • Be single and dependent on the parent.
  • Be in Australia when the application is submitted and decided.

What the Child Can Do:

  • Stay in Australia indefinitely.
  • Work and study in Australia.

  • Sponsor eligible relatives to migrate to Australia.
  • Apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible.

Important Notes for the Sponsoring Parent for Both Visas

  • Parental Responsibilities:
    • The sponsoring parent must provide adequate accommodation and financial support for the child’s reasonable living needs for the first two years in Australia.
    • The sponsor must be an Australian citizen, eligible New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent visa holder.
  • Scope of Sponsorship:
    • Subclass 101 allows children outside Australia to join their parents.
    • Subclass 802 enables children already in Australia to remain with their parents permanently.

These visas ensure dependent children can reunite with or stay with their parents in Australia under stable and supported conditions.
